If you want an authentic experience this Halloween, head down to Bob Campbell Oval after dark and you might see the Large-footed Myotis – just one of the many species of microbats that make their home in the surrounding bush at Gore Creek Reserve.
But if you do go down to the creek tonight, be sure not to make too much noise! Large-footed Myotis are an especially vulnerable group of gleaning bats that rely on listening for prey rustling sounds to find food.
Nicknamed the ‘fishing bat’, their unusually large feet are perfectly adapted to trawling along the water in the creek. This makes them unique among other species of Australian bats as they forage not only for aquatic insects but small fish as well!
Bob Campbell Oval, or Gore Creek Reserve, is a little slice of heaven on Sydney Harbour. It sits at the bottom of a creek that winds up through Lane Cove and is one of the last remaining natural creeks on the harbour.
