It is polyethylene plastic, made in the petroleum industry. When polyethylene plastic is exposed to sunlight and heat it gets brittle and breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces.
It doesn’t happen straight away, but it will happen.
These tiny pieces of plastic wash into drains, blow away in the wind or get attached to people.
They will go into the harbour – nothing can stop that – pollute the water and be eaten by fish and birds.
Let’s be clear about this: Polyethylene microplastics are toxic pollutants. It is against the law to pollute Sydney Harbour. There is nothing environmentally friendly about ‘4G’ synthetic turf on Bob Campbell Oval.
Bob Campbell Oval, or Gore Creek Reserve, is a little slice of heaven on Sydney Harbour. It sits at the bottom of a creek that winds up through Lane Cove and is one of the last remaining natural creeks on the harbour.
This is what 4G turf really is.
It doesn’t happen straight away, but it will happen.
